INGREDIENTS
Dry Ingredients
- 🧫 2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
- 🧂 1/2 cup white sugar
- 🧂 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Wet Ingredients
- 💧 1 3/4 cups warm water (110°F / 45°C)
- 🧈 1/4 cup butter, melted and cooled
- 🥚 1 egg, beaten
- 🧈 1/4 cup butter, melted (for brushing)
STEPS
Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large bowl. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
Mix sugar, salt, melted butter, egg, and whole wheat flour into yeast mixture. Stir in all-purpose flour gradually until the dough pulls away from the bowl. Knead on a floured surface for around 8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Punch down the dough. Cover and let it rise again in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.
Grease 24 muffin cups. Divide dough into two portions. Roll each into a 6x14 inch rectangle, cut into twelve 7x1 inch strips, roll into spirals, and place into muffin cups. Brush with melted butter and let rise uncovered for 40 minutes or until doubled in size.
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden. Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter.
