INGREDIENTS
Main Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 🧅 2 medium onions, minced
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef
- 🥛 1 cup milk
- 2 slices Texas toast thick-sliced bread
- ½ cup raisins
- 1 tablespoon hot chutney
- ½ tablespoon curry powder
- 1 teaspoon apricot jam
- 🧂 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 🥚 1 large egg
- 🧂 1 pinch salt
- 1 bay leaf
STEPS
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook onions until soft, approximately 2–3 minutes.
Add ground beef to the skillet. Cook and stir until browned, about 8–10 minutes.
Pour milk into a shallow dish. Soak bread in milk, then squeeze out excess and set milk aside.
Add soaked bread to the beef mixture. Stir in raisins, hot chutney, curry powder, apricot jam, 1 teaspoon salt, and black pepper.
Transfer the beef mixture to the prepared baking dish. Bake for 1 hour.
Whisk together reserved milk, egg, and a pinch of salt. Pour the mixture over the beef in the baking dish. Lay a bay leaf on top.
Bake until the custard on top is golden brown, approximately 25–30 minutes. Remove from oven and discard the bay leaf before serving.
