- 🥔 3 pounds potatoes, thinly sliced
- 🧅 ½ onion, thinly sliced
- 9 tablespoons all-purpose flour, divided
- 🧈 6 tablespoons butter, diced and divided
- 🥛 3 cups whole milk, or as needed

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Spread 1/3 of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, top with 1/3 of the onions, sprinkle with 3 tablespoons flour, and arrange 2 tablespoons butter on top. Season with salt and pepper. Repeat this layering twice more.
Warm the milk in a saucepan and pour over the layered potatoes and onions until the liquid level meets the top layer of potatoes.
Bake in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is bubbling and golden brown. Place a baking sheet underneath the dish to catch any drips.
