INGREDIENTS
Vegetables & Aromatics
- 🧄 3 large garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 🧅 1 cup chopped yellow onion
Meat
- 1 pound ground chuck
Staples & Seasonings
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1 1/2 teaspoons light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Canned & Sauces
- 🍅 1 (14-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/3 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
Cheese
- 🧀 1/2 cup cheddar cheese
- 🧀 1/2 cup Monterey Jack cheese
STEPS
Gather all ingredients. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Heat olive oil in a 12-inch cast-iron skillet over medium-high. Add garlic and sauté for about 1 minute.
Add ground chuck to the skillet, breaking it into crumbles. Cook until browned, about 6 minutes. Remove drippings.
Add chopped onion to the skillet and cook over medium heat, stirring frequently until softened, about 3 minutes.
Stir in brown sugar, dry mustard, and black pepper. Then add crushed tomatoes, ketchup, beef broth, tomato paste, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until thickened and glossy.
Spoon mashed potatoes evenly over the beef mixture to form a layer. Sprinkle shredded cheeses on top.
Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, then broil for 4-5 minutes until cheese is lightly browned.
Let the pie rest for 5 minutes before garnishing with chives and serving.

💡 For extra texture, you can add frozen peas or corn to the meat mixture before layering with mashed potatoes.Make sure the mashed potatoes are fully cooked and warm before spreading over the meat mixture to ensure even heating. To enhance flavors, use freshly grated cheese instead of pre-shredded cheese, as it melts better.
