Melt margarine and chocolate over low heat, stirring until smooth. Let cool.

Beat egg whites in a medium-sized mixing bowl until stiff (approximately 2 minutes). In a separate bowl, beat egg yolks and sugar together until thick and pale (approximately 1 minute).

Blend in the melted chocolate mixture and stir in ground almonds. Fold the beaten egg whites into the chocolate mixture, one third at a time, until no streaks of white remain. Transfer the batter into the prepared pan.

Place an 8-inch baking pan with 1 inch of water on the bottom rack of the oven to create steam. Bake the torte on the center rack for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the sides begin to pull away from the pan and the center is set. Cover the torte loosely with foil for the last 20 minutes of baking.

Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Carefully remove the sides of the pan. Invert the cake onto a serving plate and allow it to cool completely.
