INGREDIENTS
Pastry
- 1 (16 ounce) package phyllo dough
- 🧈 1 cup butter, melted
Nuts & Spices
- 1 pound chopped nuts
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Syrup
- 💧 1 cup water
- 🧂 1 cup white sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 🍯 ½ cup honey
STEPS
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and butter the sides and bottom of a 9x13-inch pan.
Chop nuts and mix with ground cinnamon. Set aside.
Unroll phyllo dough and cut the stack in half to fit the pan. Cover the dough with a damp cloth to prevent drying. Layer two sheets in the pan, brush with melted butter, and repeat this process for 8 sheets.
Sprinkle 2 to 3 tablespoons of the nut mixture over the phyllo. Layer two more sheets, brush with butter, and repeat until the top layer has 6-8 sheets.
Cut the layered dough into diamond or square shapes with a sharp knife, cutting all the way through. Bake for about 50 minutes until crisp and golden.
Make the syrup by boiling sugar and water until melted. Add vanilla and honey, then simmer for 20 minutes.
Spoon the hot syrup over the baked baklava immediately after removing it from the oven. Let cool before serving.
