Sauce Base

- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 🧂 ½ teaspoon salt
- 🥛 2 cups milk
- 1 ½ cups shredded Cheddar cheese
STEPS
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and butter a 2-quart casserole dish.
Layer half the potatoes in the casserole dish and season with salt and pepper.
Add a layer of onion slices, followed by another layer of potatoes. Season again with salt and pepper.
In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and salt, cooking for 1 minute to eliminate raw taste.
Slowly whisk in milk, 1/4 cup at a time, ensuring no lumps. Cook until thickened, approximately 3 to 5 minutes.
Stir in shredded Cheddar cheese until melted, around 30 to 60 seconds.
Pour the cheese sauce evenly over the layered potatoes and onions. Cover with aluminum foil.
Bake in the preheated oven until potatoes are tender and sauce is bubbly, approximately 90 minutes.
