INGREDIENTS
Dry Ingredients
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
Wet Ingredients
- 🧈 ⅓ cup butter, softened
- 🍚 ⅔ cup white sugar
- 🥚 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Add-ins
- 🍫 ½ cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips
- 🌰 ¼ cup chopped walnuts
Egg Wash
- 🥚 1 egg yolk, beaten
- 💧 1 tablespoon water
STEPS
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease baking sheets or line with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
In another bowl, combine flour, cocoa, and baking powder. Gradually mix into the creamed mixture. Finish mixing by hand if dough becomes stiff.
Stir in chocolate chips and walnuts.
Divide dough into two equal parts. Shape each into a loaf approximately 9 x 2 x 1 inches. Place loaves 4 inches apart on a baking sheet.
Brush the loaves with an egg yolk and water mixture.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until firm. Cool on the baking sheet for 30 minutes.
Using a serrated knife, slice each loaf diagonally into 1-inch slices. Lay the slices on their sides on the baking sheet.
Bake slices for 10 to 15 minutes on each side (20 to 30 minutes total) until dry. Cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
