What does a daily calorie estimate measure?

For a weight-stable adult, daily energy needs are approximately equal to total energy expenditure (TEE): the energy used by the body across a typical 24-hour day.

The default calculation uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation for resting energy, then applies the selected PAL to estimate daily maintenance calories.

This is best described as Mifflin-St Jeor combined with the FAO/WHO/UNU PAL framework. It is not a single “WHO formula.”

How to interpret PAL

PAL describes a whole lifestyle over time, not just scheduled workouts. The five choices in the calculator are practical points within the broader institutional ranges.

Why different methods produce different answers

Each method estimates a different part of energy expenditure or relies on different inputs. A difference between calculators does not necessarily mean one made an arithmetic error.

Frequently asked questions

BMR is measured under strict basal conditions, RMR is resting energy measured under less restrictive conditions, and TDEE is the total energy used across a full day.

Mifflin-St Jeor is the practical default for most adults. Cunningham is useful when a reasonably measured body-fat percentage is available; Harris-Benedict provides a comparison.

Consider the entire day, including work, transport, household tasks, standing and exercise. Do not choose from workout frequency alone.

Wearables and calculators use different models and inputs. Heart-rate sensing, movement detection, activity classification and individual physiology can all change the estimate.
